The cradle of the cultivated coffee trade — and its rarest origin.
Yemen is where cultivated coffee began. From the highland terraces of Bani Matar, Haraaz, and Ismaili in the 15th century, beans traveled through the port of Mokha to Cairo, Istanbul, Venice, and ultimately the wider world. The very word 'mocha' is a Yemeni inheritance — and the cup remains unlike anything else in specialty coffee.
Yemeni coffee is grown on stone-walled terraces stepped into mountainsides above 1,800 meters, often interplanted with qat, walnut, and apricot. Trees are ancient — many plots contain seedlings descended from genetic material centuries old, recently grouped under the 'Yemenia' designation by the Center for Coffee Research and led by farmers whose families have farmed the same plots for generations.
Almost everything is processed naturally: cherries are dried on rooftops or raised beds, and the resulting cup leans deeply complex — cardamom, dried fig, baker's chocolate, occasionally a winey edge that polarizes Q graders in the best possible way. The 2020 Best of Yemen auction shattered prices for naturally processed lots, with several scoring above 90.
Volumes remain tiny by global standards — under 200,000 bags annually — and the country's ongoing instability makes export logistics genuinely difficult. For specialty roasters and consumers, that scarcity is part of why a Haraaz natural is one of the most prized cups on any menu. For the Arabian Peninsula in particular, Yemen is a matter of cultural inheritance as much as commerce.

The pre-eminent Yemen-only specialty roastery, founded by Faris Sheibani — directly sourced from over 1,000 Yemeni producers.
Treat a Haraaz natural with reverence. A V60 at 1:15, 93°C, 3:00 brew time will lift the cardamom and dried-fruit aromatics; for a richer cup, try it as cezve / Arabic-style with a single cardamom pod.
